How To Influence Others With NLP: Towards And Away From Motivation

If you want to influence someone, you may want to take a trick from horse trainers, who use “”the carrot, and the stick.”

The horse moves towards the carrot, what it desires, and away from the stick, what it fears. People are motivated in much the same way. We both search for what we desire, and try and avoid what we fear.

Some people are motivated more by the carrot, and others more by the stick, but there’s a lot of both in all of us.

If you’ve been versed in NLP, you might have heard this described as towards or away from motivation.

We move towards pleasure, and away from pain. This is also true in a much broader sense.

A person will either go with the majority, or they will take a stand against it. NLP describes these as ‘meta programs’ ” but you need to realize that they are not set in stone.

A person can move towards pleasure in one environment, and away from pain in another ” most of the time we are all actually running a combination of the two.

Realize that people’s unconscious motivations are often really this simple ” towards pleasure or away from pain ” and you’ll be able to easily motivate others. Sometimes people are too stuck in one meta program, and this can cause problems.

Perhaps you know someone who spends his or her whole life running from pain, but never really moves towards pleasure. In this situation you’ll need to ramp up the images of pleasure and deplete those of pain to help them live a more fulfilling life.

You can do this by using vivid mental imaginary to stimulate both the imagination and the emotions. Use sensory language that describes what we see, what we hear, what we taste, what we touch, what we smell, and what we feel. By connecting with the senses, you’ll connect with the imagination. By connecting with the imagination, you’ll connect with the emotions.

Simply giving a logical list of the benefits of one course of action and the costs of another may work well in the board room, but in real life it will only create a “bored” room! If you want people on the edge of their seats, you have to cater your conversation towards the subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind is not a creature of logic, it’s driven by emotion and imagination. As well as using sensory description described above, phrase your statements in a way that people can easily relate to. Use references to everyday life, and everyday frustrations and joys. The excitement of your first pay day contrasted with the frustration of having bills piled up is a great towards: away from structure to help motivate someone to find a job, for example.

Creating A Happiness Filter Using Self-Hypnosis

My Nana used to tell me that there was a lady in the village who wore rose tinted spectacles, so whenever we visited them and went into the village or the neighbouring town, I was always looking out for elderly women with glasses that had roses on them… I never saw them, but imagine exactly what I thought they’d be like.

Later on in life, of course I got to know what she actually meant. That there are some people out there who perceive the world in a particular way. I got the impression that my Nana and perhaps lots of other people tend to think that at times this could be a bad thing, or at the very least, it is unrealistic. I get that.

Yet I also think it is very useful to reflect on our lives in a progressive and positive way.

When you look at people who are unhappy or down in the dumps or even depressed, they do tend to perceive the world in a way that reminds them of all they have to be unhappy about. Often people reflect on their life and see only the things they consider to be bad or unpleasant.

There is a well documented and much used process of journaling that therapists often recommend that involves an individual writing in their journal before they go to bed at night, and listing 3-5 things in their day that made them happy.

What this does is points the mind at the stuff that is considered good, laudable and allows us to filter our experience in a way that helps make us happier. For some people this is what they need – to take a period of time out each day and don some rose tinted spectacles as they look at their day…. Then after a couple of weeks of doing this, getting into the habit of doing such, it starts to have a generalizing, happiness-inducing effect that I think many people can benefit greatly from.

So today’s article is with this kind of thing in mind, and is simply doing that process of filtering, but using self-hypnosis to reflect and filter and as a result, we get to amplify the good feelings and focus in a deeper manner.

7 Steps To Create A Hypnotic Happiness Filter:

Step One: Induce hypnosis in yourself. Engage in any self-hypnosis induction you know of and make sure you develop a really receptive mindset.

Once you are settled, relaxed and have hypnotised yourself, move on to the next step.

Step Two: Imagine that in front you is the book of your life and each chapter represents a chapter of your life. Flick through the pages, going deeper and deeper inside your mind as you turn more and more of the pages.

Tell yourself, that as you start from the beginning, turning the front cover over, that each page you turn takes you deeper inside your mind, yet you remain focused and engaged in the process.

Take all the time necessary, do this slowly and thoroughly, maybe even exhaling each time you turn the page over. When you get to today’s page, move on to the next step.

Step Three: As you look at the page for today, allow your mind to scan through the page and notice some bits are highlighted, golden and colourful, they really stand out on the page. They might be moments when you laughed or shared some laughter with another person. It might be something that made you smile. It might be a compliment you received, it may be something you felt you did well or even that others recognized, it can be absolutely anything from the day just gone by that you and your mind consider to be a good moment. A golden highlight from that day.

Go to the first one of these highlights of the day, and recall what happened, who was there, what you saw, what you heard, how you felt. Imagine for a few moments that you are there again, enjoying those feelings.

Spend a few moments reminding yourself of that highlight, bask in the feelings of it and when you have noticed those feelings, perhaps even amplified them, spread them through your body, then move on to the next step.

Step Four: Now go to another highlighted area on today’s page of the book of your life.

Again, recall what happened, who was there, what you saw, what you heard, how you felt. Imagine for a few moments that you are there again, enjoying those feelings.

Spend a few moments reminding yourself of that highlight, bask in the feelings of it and when you have noticed those feelings, perhaps even amplified them, spread them through your body; maybe as if the feeling is a colour, or a certain sensation that can develop or even as if it is a sound that you detect and can resonate within you. Once you have really enjoyed reliving and reminding yourself of this highlight, move on to the next step.

Step Five: Now repeat step 4 two or three more times. When you have repeated it and enjoyed a total of 3-5 highlights from your day and really engaged in the happiness and reflected positively on your day, move on to step six.

Step Six: You now that each and every day has its ups and downs and you are realistic about life, but today, you had a good day. You have recalled a number of highlights that surely constitute a good day.

Look at the book of your life again and colour the entire page of today gold to signify that this was indeed a golden, enjoyable and happy day, and that you intend to have more and more of these kinds of days. You start to notice the stuff that makes you happier more and more readily and capably.

Once the page is entirely golden and you know it was a good day, move on to the final step.

Step Seven: Knowing what a good day you have had, take a deep energizing breath, wiggle your fingers and toes, open your eyes and bring this session to an end.

Decide to practice this every day for a week, maybe just before you go to bed at night, so that you’ll look back and think – wow, that was a great week, a golden week… Maybe you can even carve out this time in your life as a halcyon era that stands out for all the right reasons.

Choose to make your perception of life contribute to your well-being and have a wonderful day today.

Choosing a Best Induction Script

Essentially, induction scripts are used to provide clear suggestions and guidelines to people in a hypnotic state. They simply lead the client and can be easy, classical, visual elements or else may be sensorial scripts. For one to achieve the best results while using them, one must be keen on the type of induction he decides to choose and must put into consideration various factors as explained here.

To start with, it’s important to choose an induction script that is easy to understand and to use. Just as there are different advancements in hypnosis, induction scripts are also different in that some are fairly easy to use whereas others are complicated. The ease of using a script is greatly determined by the method of its use and some prove very difficult to use and understand such as scripts using neuro-linguistic programming model.

Before choosing an induction script it is important for you to consider the role it is intended to play. Some scripts are designed also to treat some problems as well and it’s appropriate to use each script wisely. As a hypnotist, applying wrong scripts to clients may create long term problems in them and worsen their condition.

Before choosing an induction script for a client, it’s wise to know your clients better and understand their personality. Some difficult clients may have personality distortions and their ego may highly determine which induction script they might use and which they might not. It’s also important to choose an induction script that directly addresses the problem in question and not generalizing. An induction script should address an issue specifically and aim to tackle a specific problem.

You should always try to think outside the box and always expand certain methods in order to suit your clients better. Try and see how existing methods can be improved to achieve better results. It’s also not good to do the same thing always so coming up with something new is always preferable. However, the new methods should be better and surprising.

If you think that you have reached higher levels of proficiency in hypnosis, then you should give it a go and write your own script. This helps you in your future projects and it’s always easier to use your own idea rather than copying and implementing someone peace of mind. The Internet can be a rich source of ideas if you decide to take this route.

You have to determine your level of proficiency and only use a script that you are fully prepared on. If you find yourself not well suited to adopt and practice a given script, take your time to learn it before you can practice it on your clients.

Induction script is one of the most important initial conditions of hypnosis. Based on their uses, implication methods and results, there have been several types of scripts of induction and the hypnotist is required to select the best one among them to reach a particular goal. Top ranked hypnosis learning sites like http://www.themagicofcoverthypnosis.com/category/covert-hypnosis/ can teach how to determine the merit and quality of an induction script. Understanding the script as well as learning its outcome and knowing the psychology of the subject are very crucial for the success. No matter whether the script is simple or complex or pre-written or you wrote you on your own, it must meet these qualifications to be the best induction script for a given situation.

How You Can Hypnotize People Right Away

Very often you may have seen a magician or a performer on television hypnotizing someone. But when you say “sleep”, how do you make the person actually fall off to sleep? The basic question that needs to be asked is – How to hypnotize someone instantly? Can anyone do this? Is it really simple to hypnotize someone instantly? The answer to this question is – Yes!

Why is it easy to hypnotize someone?

It’s really possible to hypnotize someone instantly. But, it takes time to practice and only after some sincere practice and dedication will you become a professional. Pattern interrupt is the basis behind instant hypnotic induction. Whenever someone does something habitually, we’re doing it automatically without our conscious mind knowing what’s happening. The simplest example that applies to everyone is breathing. Our mind is setup so that it remembers what needs to be done and automatically performs that work – driving home after work for instance, you’ll automatically turn onto the right path without even knowing it. So, basically our mind does this to prevent the need of learning the same thing over and over again.

Pattern interruption and Hypnotism

Pattern interruption is basically the reason behind hypnotism. If you want to know how to hypnotize someone instantly, you’ll need to understand and implement the concept behind pattern interruption. Pattern interruption does exactly what it says, it interrupts your routine. The program that runs in your mind is interrupted for a short time, so that it causes confusion within the mind and hence the individual falls into a hypnotic trance. Therefore, if you want to hypnotize someone you should be familiar with pattern interruption.

Suppose a child approaches someone and stretches out their hand for a handshake, but at the last minute changes his mind and blows a raspberry instead. This is a simple case of pattern interruption wherein the person on the other side is confused as to what just happened. They’ll even wonder whether the person actually stretched his hand out. How to hypnotize someone may be a basic question, but the answer even though it’s simple is hard to implement.

How to hypnotize someone within milliseconds

If you wish to hypnotize someone, then you’ll need to understand the above mentioned example. That’s just a simple case of pattern interruption, if you’re pretty good at hypnotism you could blurt out your command perfectly within the span of confusion causing the other person to react to your command. But, this gap won’t last long and therefore could be a real challenge for most people.

How to hypnotize someone – the secret

As mentioned earlier, the time frame available to hypnotize someone is really small. Therefore, most professionals use this time to tell the person that they’re hypnotized and under his control. This works very often and has been proven to work. But, like anything else on this planet – practice makes perfect!

John Handson’s job is a psychotherapist,he wrote many articles about how to hypnotize someone on his website.

Releasing emotional baggage

Emotional baggage can reach a large weight or even enter the category of emotional garbage. If you are under the burden of negative emotions suffers, you will realize that it is not only important, but it is in fact essential for to find a way to offload your well-being. A trip to the dump seems to be too late.

When you want to bad feelings are plagued by bad memories, or guilty emotions you just forget them. You want to sling them away and wipe them clean out your mind. They just want you not hanging around your happiness and balance. You know that this is what you want, but you also realize that this ideal is impossible. You just can’t tip that garbage in the dump and to walk away with a spirit that is devoid of such memories. Your mind won’t let you do that, no matter how many you would like. You cannot wipe away those memories.

But when you really think about it that if you reframe your goal something you can actually achieve what is at the core of your desires. Rather than block from those memories, what you really want is to stop the bad feelings associated with these memories. You want to just stop feeling bad. And so instead of trying to tip that stubborn and uncomfortable emotional garbage in the dump, you should take for recycling.

What is needed to be able to take a step back and modify that instinctive emotional reaction that has hitherto been overloading your senses and leeching your energy and spirit. Hypnosis is a great way of accessing your automatic memory storage and related instinctive Behavioral responses. In fact, there is a strong body of medical research that its use in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) supports.

I’m using the example of PTSD here, as this is arguably the most intensely experienced form of negative emotional response regarding past events and circumstances. Most people who wish to let go of emotional baggage experienced a lower degree of impact.

For example, you might want to get over a broken relationship and stop thinking about your ex. you want to stop thinking about a situation at work that has you upset. There are many variations of emotional overload that you might be experiencing. The thing to remember is that hypnosis is a very useful tool in taking a step back and see things from a different angle and being able to distance myself from the emotions that you swamp.

Hypnosis is easy to use and fast to work. Most people don’t really consider hypnosis, such as they don’t know enough about it. But one look at the medical examination that has taken her efficacy show that you soon realize that it is a very effective treatment for many emotional issues.

Inside Secrets of Stage Hypnotism

AS THE PENDULUM SWINGS: If It Isn’t Hypnosis… Then What Is It?
by Lindsay A. Brady
The Mind/Brain Connection: Finding Peace of Mind Through Joy of Consciousness
Enjoy AS THE PENDULUM SWINGS-an entertaining true life story of a hypnotherapist who richly transformed his own perception and life through helping over 27,000 clients.
Challenge yourself to grow personally with the innovative, progressive, enlightening-and even humorous-information about how the mind works that Brady delivers with brilliance and depth.
Investigate the phenomenon of past-life regression with Brady as he asks: Did we really live them or did we not live them? You decide!
Discover the driving force behind “hypnosis.” Learn what “hypnosis” is and what it is not-what it can do and what it cannot do.
This book is not only a book about “hypnosis,” but also a memoir about how the author’s life transformed from one of fear, low self-esteem, guilt and self-doubt into one of confidence, joy and peace of mind by using the process called “hypnosis”-a process more accurately described by the word perceptionism. It is a story about his personal crusade to overcome the manacles of tradition, bigotry, closed-mindedness and self-imposed limitation that eventually led to being at peace with himself and pleased with who he is.
It is a tale of becoming a hypnotherapist and developing a unique approach to effectively help his clients rid themselves of unwanted habits and self-destructive behavior. It is a book that tells stories about the lessons he learned from thousands of clients that, in turn, compelled him to scrap obsolete terms, techniques, methods and even some of his most cherished concepts. It is a book about having to adjust his approach and methods in order to effectively help his clients more easily achieve their goals, engage in healthy behavior, be free from guilt and find happiness and peace of mind. It is a story about solving the puzzle of how to demonstrate to his clients that perception is the means by which the human mind, brain, and body communicate with each other. It explains how human consciousness can intentionally instruct its brain to bring about healthy behavior and create an emotional state of well-being that is independent of past experiences, present conditions, and the uncertainty of the future. And it is a story that validates the power and the dynamics of taking charge of now.
AS THE PENDULUM SWINGS is a treatise intended to dispel outmoded ideas about “hypnosis” as being something a person goes into or under, or that it is a trance in which a person is unaware. It tells the story of how the vague, stale term, hypnotism (which implies nothing about a process), is transformed into the definitive dynamic term, perceptionism… the driving force behind the “hypnotic process” and human behavior.
“Take a deep breath and relax all the tension in your body because you are about to read some things that will make you very happy. The key to a mentally healthy and fulfilling life is yours to use… it’s in you already; the search is over.”
- Steve Chandler, Author of FEARLESS

“Hypnosis” is not magic… It just seems like it is! Bradian Hypnotherapy: The hypnotherapy approach developed by Lindsay A. Brady, C. Ht, is a unique approach for using hypnotherapy to change how you feel and act.

Using Self Hypnosis To Eat Artfully

I can recall attending a wine tasting event given by the Berry Brothers wine company in Basingstoke when I was a lot younger than I am today. What a brilliant event. As with many wine tastings, you pay for a ticket, then get to sample lots of wines with a view to purchasing them. I did it wrong. I ignored the big bins of sawdust to spit my wine out after tasting and continued to swill down copious amounts of my favourites that were on offer.

Headache ensued the next day.

Since those younger days I have developed a penchant for many wines and even studied wine a little bit, though don’t really claim to be any kind of an expert, I still know how to taste my wine, note its character, aroma and depth. (Those who know me know I love deep luxurious full-bodied reds like Rioja, Barrolo and Chateauxneuf Du Paps and also very dry and crisp white wines such as Chablis and Sancerre)

If you have ever had a conversation with a proper wine expert or a sommelier, you’ll know that these guys have so much knowledge and expertise about wines and whenever I watch them drink and taste their wines, it is a joy to watch – they seem to be able to extract the most amount of taste, pleasure and joy out of the tiniest amount of wine; they raise the glass and look upon the wine, they raise it to their nose and breathe its aroma in deeply, then look at how it rolls down the inside of the glass. They assess it and then take a (sometimes noisy) sip along with plenty of air in the mouth and they roll it around the mouth to engage as many of the taste buds as possible. It is then spat out and the taste endures and lingers and they get other flavours and characters coming to the mouth before they cleanse the pallet with water.

All the senses get engaged and it is clearly a pleasurable and discerning way to enjoy the drink that I tend to quaff instead of enjoying as much as I should from time to time.

This artful way of tasting wine is something used by many hypnotherapists to illustrate how those wishing to reduce their weight can derive huge amounts of pleasure and satisfaction from eating much smaller amounts of food.

Major contributor to the field of hypnotherapy Theodore Barber is the earliest documented user of this approach that I can find, using this approach in the 60s, though it has been picked up and used by many hypnosis professionals and authors over the years. William S Kroger who I have quoted many times before on this blog promoted the use of the notion of “eat like a gourmet” back in the 70s and more recently Herbert Mann used the idea of “eating as an art” as he referred to wine tasters and coffee tasters in his approach that features in a number of books including the famed Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors.

The process that I am offering up here today takes this notion and makes it available to the self-hypnotist. With this process, we are going to mentally rehearse the idea of eating as an art form, then allow it to happen in real-life.

As I have been saying in other recent blog entries as we arrive at this festive season, we can make sure we do not arrive in the New Year in need of bigger trousers if we think about what we are doing in our minds when we are presented with excessive and unhealthy foods. If you think about the differences between my own younger wine tasting skills and that of the sommelier, then you can get a grasp of the difference between eating and stuffing ourselves to bursting point and compare that with someone who derives much pleasure and taste from smaller amounts of food.

Just run through the following 6 Steps To Use Self-Hypnosis To Eat Artfully:

Step One: Hypnotise yourself. You can do so using any method that you have been taught or are aware of. You can also use a deep relaxation method or meditation to get a focused mind, but self-hypnosis is better.

Once you have induced hypnosis, move on to step two.

Step Two: Think about a typical meal time, and start to think that you make a decision now to eat only at meal-times and when you eat you are going to place all your attention on that meal until you finish it, so as you think of a particular and typical meal time, notice that there are no distractions, no television, no books to read, no phone to tinker with…

You look at the food in front of you, look and examine the meal before you, observe the colours, the textures and inhale the aromas of the food before you.

All the time that you are examining the food in front of you, tell yourself that you are going deeper inside of your mind with each thought that you think and use this step to deepen your experience of hypnosis at the same time. When you have got that detailed meal in front of you and you have deepened sufficiently, then move on to the next step.

Step Three: Now start to eat the food before you (imaginary eating), and do this is a very particular way.

Firstly, take very small pieces. Either cut them up small or take small bites. Take only small pieces of food. Continue to take in all the colours and aromas of the food while you bring it to your mouth in a deliberate and controlled manner. And do make sure it is deliberate and controlled, so that you feel as if you are doing this on purpose.

Focus your complete and utter attention upon the food you then place into your mouth, put your cutlery down and move on to the next step.

Step Four: Now with the food in your mouth, making sure that your thoughts do not wander and you focus in on the phone, imagine chewing the food slowing and thoroughly and repeatedly. Let is pass across all of your taste buds and notice how your mouth is stimulated in a variety of different ways while you chew and eat. Chew a lot and make sure the food moves around your mouth so that you can derive the most amount of flavour and satisfaction from the smaller amounts. Let your tongue really engage in the food and let it linger over it for plenty of time before you swallow that food. Notice how easily and fully your taste buds are satisfied and how much pleasure you gain from such a small quantity of food.

Continue repeating this process for a while, rally focussing on each mouthful, highly aware fo each chew, enjoying each small amount of food to the maximum. Then after 5-7 mouthfuls or so, move on to the next step.

Step Five: Now start to notice that as those mouthfuls arrive at your stomach, notice how satisfying and warming they feel in the stomach. Notice how easily full your stomach feels with the smaller and healthier amount of food in it.

Notice the sensation of fullness and satisfaction spread through your tummy and enjoy it more and more. Maybe you’ll feel full before you finish eating all the mouthfuls, but you know that by the end of the meal, for sure, you’ll feel satisfied and at ease and fulfilled with the food you have eaten.

Continue to take mouthfuls, focusing on them, letting them be slow and deliberate, thoroughly chewed, extracting as much taste and pleasure from each one, then notice each mouthful having a deeply satisfying sensation in the tummy.

If satisfaction were a colour, what colour would it be? If satisfaction were a sound, what sound would that be? Now as you imagine the feeling of satisfaction developing within you, now add that colour and sound and imagine yourself feeling more and more at ease, comfortable and full.

Notice how you start to take more time over each mouthful as the meal progresses and how much easier it is for you to become absolutely satisfied in a way that enhances your health and contributes to your well-being.

Step Six: Tell yourself that you do not necessarily need to avoid food or try to give it up, you just need to adopt the eating habits of a gourmet who extracts all the taste and pleasure from each morsel of food that is consumed.

When you have repeated that idea to yourself a few times, open your eyes, wiggle your fingers and toes and take a couple of deep breath to bring the session to an end.

Then, once you have practiced the above process 4-5 times, start applying this new way of eating at your real-life meal times and engage in the process that you have mentally rehearsed and practiced in your hypnosis sessions. Notice how you take your time over eating and make a deliberate choice to do so.

Start to adopt that process of eating like a gourmet and making an art of how you eat and it is going to help you greatly throughout the festive season.

First Aid For A Bad Mood! Using Self-Hypnosis To Get Into A Great Mood

Sometimes we don’t need to go for a deep, lengthy therapeutic procedure. Sometimes we just want to give ourselves a lift, especially if we have been in a bad mood for a while, or maybe been subjected to a number of problems in our life that have made it seem difficult to snap into a great mood, or perhaps we’ve been ignoring good stuff or felt that there has not been a lot to get excited about… Well today’s process is absolutely for just getting a pep up, a mood advancement process.

The reason I refer to it being ‘first aid’ for a bad mood is because it deals with symptoms of a bad mood.

I can remember being at an NLP training watching Richard Bandler on stage presenting and he suggested that we all force a smile on our faces three times in succession and to observe closely what happened within us. All those of us that did it felt better and got a shot of well-being, though it varied in intensity. It was a great way to alter mood. It actually started me off with a fit of giggles at the time and just thinking about that experience continues to make me smile.

Likewise, when I think of Frank Spencer or Tommy Cooper and their hilarious facial expressions in their comedy routines and old TV shows, I get a shot of humour and joy in my head that advances my mood for sure… I am also one of those people who laughs at comedy shows where there is some misfortune experienced, so I laugh at facial expressions of disgust or failure sometimes too.

Then there are funny sounds. I think most boys find whoopie cushions hilarious and therefore farting sounds make them laugh, but there are many things that are considered hilarious by us all when we hear them or imagine hearing them. The classic circus clowns music or the Benny Hill theme tune also seem to be the kinds of sounds that are impossible to maintain feelings of misery when they are playing and make me smile.

So if all that stuff can help you feel better, and offer up some first aid for a dip in mood, then why not combine it all?

That is what Assen Alladin offers up to help deal with initial symptoms of depression, as demonstrated in the Handbook of Cognitive Hypnotherapy For Depression. Of course, if you have depression, then you’ll need to see a qualified professional and get tailored solutions and not rely on snippets and techniques offered up in blog entries. I can’t claim that these processes are anywhere near as effective as proper therapeutic solutions offered up by a therapist who tailors things for your specific requirements and needs.

I have compiled a number of those processes and combined them with self-hypnosis as a means of generating a great mood. It does not have to be used only if you have a bad mood, it can be used as a pick-me-up or a booster of some kind too.

Seven Steps To Enhance Your Mood

Prior to starting this process, make sure you are in a place where you’ll be undisturbed for the period of time and be in a seated position, not a lying position. Let your arms and legs be uncrossed and not touching each other. Take a couple of really good deep breaths and as you exhale, consider having a good ‘sigh’ or even letting out a groan as you get plenty of air in your lungs, which is going to help build a foundation of letting go of the old unwanted mood (if you were in a bad one) and help you get into a great mood.

While taking your deep breaths, think about a word which you love or a word that you associate with happiness, or that is silly and funny in some shape or form. Something that you do not have to share with anyone, that is personally funny or fills you with cheer or that you consider to be quirky. It is going to be a word that is used in this session today and thereafter to rekindle the good feelings and use it to generate good feelings. Get that nicely lodged in your mind as you continue with your breaths.

As you get comfortable in your seated position, adjust yourself so that you adopt a strong and purposeful posture whereby the crown of your head is pointed straight up at the ceiling and your shoulders are broad but not raised or hunched up, almost as if you are a guard on sentry duty. You want to adopt a good strong positive posture so that your body, the vehicle for this mood enhancement is in a different place than it was previously and is ready to help advance the mood.

So with your posture strong and positive, you begin with the process of inducing hypnosis.

Step One:Induce self-hypnosis using whatever means you are aware of. Alternatively use a progressive relaxation process or a mindfulness technique, get yourself absorbed, engaged, relaxed and most importantly have a receptive mind. Once you have hypnotised yourself, move on to the next step.

Step Two: To deepen the hypnosis and to start our good mood creation and subsequent advancement off, you want to lighten the sensation of the head.

People often refer to feeling light headed, and we want it to be a good light-headed sensation. What’s more, negative states of mind are often associated with a heaviness of the head.

To do this, imagine that your head is a big, heavy bag of sand and that there is a hole in the back and the bottom of the bag and the sand is pouring out slowing and thoroughly. As it pours out, you go deeper into hypnosis and your head feels lighter and more comfortable.

Tell yourself that it feels lighter as you imagine it to enhance the effect.

Spend as much time on this step as is necessary for you to develop a notable sensation of lightness in your head and once you have that, move on to the next step.

Step Three: With the lightness sensations in place, maintaining your positive strong posture, you now force a smile on your face three times.

Even if it feels false or forced, just smile widely and broadly, as if posing for a photograph. Then when you have relaxed the muscles after the smile, repeat it another two times.

Imagine seeing your face smiling, imagine watching your lips curling in a big smile and think about smiles in general as you force the smiles onto your face one at a time, three times in succession. Notice how it makes you feel, even the tiniest of sensations.

Be thorough with this and notice how it makes you feel. Notice the sensations somewhere within you. Once you have noticed them, then move on to the next step.

Step Four: Now think of and imagine a funny face. This could be someone you saw or knew in real-life, or someone you have seen on the television or in a film, or even something you just imagined and created in your own mind. Maybe it is someone who made you laugh for any reason whatsoever. Choose someone that makes you smile when you think about them.

Imagine that face in as much detail as possible; the expression, the colours and even think of any sounds as you remember how much it made you smile or laugh when you saw it, maybe they spoke in a funny manner.

Think about what it is you find so funny and amusing about that face and really imagine it there in front of you.

Once you have that vivid in your mind, notice how it makes you feel to see it and watch it again and when you notice those feelings, move on to the next step.

Step Five: Now think about and recall a time in your life that was a happy, funny time where you shared uplifting feelings or laughter with others.

Remember where you were, who you were with, hear the sounds of laughter or happiness and see the colours of the place, the shades of light, notice how you feel to be there again in your imagination… And do really be there, in those shoes, seeing through those eyes, hearing those sounds and experiencing those great feelings.

Spend as much time as is necessary for you to really feel as if you are there in that place, enjoying those feelings of well-being, happiness and laughter.

When you have those great feelings, move on to the next step.

Step Six: Continue to enjoy the feelings of smiling, of that funny face and then that occasion of happiness and as you notice the feelings you are enjoying, think of your happy or funny (or silly) word that you chose prior to starting step one.

See the word in a bright colour in your mind, imagine saying it and even imagine funny music playing as you look at it – or even a funny sound. Play the word loudly, brightly and in a funny manner to yourself in your mind and associate this word with all these good feelings you have created.

Once you have spent enough time on this step and you feel that the word is associated with those great feelings, tell yourself that when you repeat this word it starts to remind you of these great feelings and rekindles them. Then move on to the final step.

Step Seven: Exit hypnosis and end this session by wiggling your fingers and toes and taking a couple of energizing breaths and opening your eyes.

As I say often with these techniques, choose to go and take some action that shows you that you have changed your mood, or at the very least notice how differently you behave and respond as a result of your mood being a good one and make it your aim to practice this process.

Practice this process and repeat it in it’s entirety a few times. Then start to practice using and saying your word to yourself to be a means of accessing that good mood as and when you choose; with practice, effort and repetition you’ll be able to do it with ease.

How to Relieve a Tension Headache Without the Use of Drugs

Tension headaches are the most common headaches that occur, although the cause of it is still unknown. It often lasts for as short as an hour to even a week. Having chronic tension headaches may mean a constant ache on your head, which can be quite infuriating and uncomfortable.

Because headaches caused by tension are a common occurrence, there is a wide range of medications and solutions available to treat it. From the most mundane cure to the extraordinary ones, people have often used the treatment that works best for them and gives them a relief from this kind of headache.

What does a tension headache feel like? It often starts as a dull pain on the forehead and temple area. Some describe it as wearing a tight hat or band on the head, hence the name tension headache. Neck and back muscles may also be contracted or tense, contributing to the headache.

What can trigger a headache? It actually varies for each individual. When depressed, anxious, or anticipating a conflict to occur, it can cause a painful headache. Sometimes, skipping meals, getting a few hours of sleep, and being immobile can trigger an attack. For women, fluctuations in hormones can commonly start a head ache . High blood pressure and depression are also probable causes. Oftentimes, stress is involved. In fact, the top answer when people were interviewed on what they felt before the headache started is being stressed and hungry.

How can you feel relief from the pain of having a tension headache, especially a chronic one? Depending on the trigger, analgesics are frequently the easiest treatment since popping a couple of pills will help ease the pain. However, taking too much may also start a tension headache instead of treating it. Eating a light snack or getting more sleep is also a good way to get rid of a tension headache. Treating the hypertension, depression, and hormonal imbalance may also help. Sometimes, other forms of treatment can be more useful, especially when other treatments have been exhausted to no avail. Examples of such are hypnosis, guided imagery, and NLP.

Hypnosis or hypnotherapy is fast becoming a popular form of treatment, removing its former reputation as being a form of entertainment. The reason for this is its ability to let a person experience deep relaxation or what others may refer to as a hypnotic state. When the body is relaxed, tensions are released, thus the body is relieved of its tension headache. Furthermore, when the body is at this state of relaxation, it is also easy for it to accept suggestions into its subconscious. These suggestions will help the person have a different outlook and perspective, thus handling situations differently, in a way that it will not cause the person any stress.

Guided imagery on the other hand, makes use of images, that a person visualizes and stores into its memory. How can this help? The person is instructed to imagine a scene or an instance wherein they feel relaxed and carefree. With this in mind, it can signal the body to experience that relaxation, which can eventually cause the body to relax as well. Also, visualizing solutions to stressors and situations that contribute to stress can help bring down stress levels so as to make it easier to relax. This method is usually in combination with hypnosis.

Lastly, NLP or Neuro linguistic programming is another form of treatment that uses positive suggestions and words instead of images. Using the same technique as with guided imagery, negative thoughts that regularly contribute to having a headache are replaced with positive ones. These positive inputs are repetitively listened to until it becomes part of the thinking process. Therefore, whenever faced with the same situation, it will be handled in a positive manner, instead of a negative one, thus decreasing the stress and the incidence of having a tension headache.

Tension headaches are the products of stress. Conquer the stress with the mind to conquer the headache.

Conversational hypnosis trance induction techniques

conversationalhypnosistrance002There are different ways of inducing trance. However the strength of conversational hypnosis is it’s ability to use apparently normal language to hypnotize other people without them knowing it, leading them into something called the ‘open trance.’ Conversational hypnosis does this by the subtle use of linguistic techniques and behavioural gesture. So what are these and how do they work?

The basic conversational hypnosis process is that you first get the subjects attention; build a rapport with them and captivate their conscious mind; calibrate that captivation to maintain an ‘open trance;’ use hypnotic language to make suggestions to their subconscious and finally amplify and reinforce those suggestions until you are reasonably sure of success. Of course this is an extremely simplistic overview. Within each of these steps there are some specific techniques, principles and patterns that you need to understand and practice in, order to be an effective conversational hypnotist.

During conversational hypnosis, the purpose of establishing the open trance is to enable you to subsequently use embedded commands, within normal speech, later in the conversation. Broadly speaking this is achieved through the use of a narrative which employs metaphor to stimulate the imagination of the subject and suggest change. This may sound a bit complicated but isn’t really once you start to break the process down into specific linguistic techniques. However before you can get to that stage you need to establish the “trance.” This can also form part of the overall narrative but is more about establishing a relationship in the initial stages. Once again conversational hypnosis uses specific phrases and patterns to make this happen.

For example you need to understand “pacing and leading.” This means that you start by mirroring the subjects physiology, choice of words, tone of voice and so on. This helps to quickly establish rapport. You can then make a reference to the subjects current, physical reality by echoing what they are currently experiencing. For example you might say, “as you sit here listening to me.” This anchors them both physically and psychologically to the process you are leading them through. In the same way by clearly referencing and undeniable fact you are establishing the concept of certainty. You can strengthen this process by using a vocal rhythm and tonality that is in harmony with their own.

You can then use ‘mind reading’ to further enhance your status within the relationship. Don’t worry this isn’t some sort of psycho-babble. Conversational hypnosis is very firmly grounded in reality not science fiction. All ‘mind reading’ refers to is a statement that gives the impression that you are extremely knowledgeable about the subject, their feelings or state of mind. For example you could say “I know what you’re thinking…” or “I know how you feel”. You are both establishing empathy and giving the impression of insight.

You could then go on to use a ‘lost performative.’ Here what you are trying to do is establish your value to the subject by alluding to an apparent fact. For example you could say “many people believe talking things through with a stranger makes you feel fantastic.” This may or may not be true but, within the context of a conversation, it will almost certainly remain unquestioned by the subject. This is pretty handy because you have just said that talking to a stranger (you) will make the subject feel great.

trance like pic003Another useful technique is to focus upon linking words such as “then,” “because,” “therefore” and so on. For example you could use a phrase like “if you are here with me then this will be a real turning point for you.” By establishing cause and effect in this way you are not only identifying the benefits of talking to you in the first place but are, more importantly, beginning to suggest the possible benefits of future change. You can amplify this association by using ‘complex equivalence.’ Essentially you suggest a causal relationship that is not necessarily proven but is desirable from a hypnotic perspective. For example “talking like this to me means that you are already making positive changes.” Similarly “presupposition” allows you to make assumptions that will benefit the process. “Shall we sit here or over there?” The question is ‘where’ will they sit with you not, ‘if’ they will. In doing this you are both establishing the legitimacy of your relationship and your authority within it.

Another handy strategy is to use ‘universal quantifiers.’ These are powerful generalisations that don’t need clarification but carry significant impact. For example “everyone says” or “we all believe,” “it happens every time” etc. Similarly ‘modal operators’ are words that suggest a moral imperative, or a compelling authority, “you must save yourself,” “you should listen to me” and so on. Another useful technique is the ‘tag question.’ This enables you to ask a question with the tonality of a statement simply by adding a reflective question at the end of a statement. Like this, “you want to do as I say don’t you?” This is essentially a ruse to enable you to soften the resolve of the subject without rousing their defenses.

This is by no means an exhaustive list so, as you can see, there are numerous linguistic techniques that you can use to increase the effectiveness of your trance induction when you use conversational hypnosis. However the true power of this hypnosis technique is its almost imperceptible difference to ordinary conversation. The linguistic techniques outlined here work well but only work at all within the context of a natural conversational flow. It is therefore equally important to focus upon this ability as it is to master these language patterns.

Set the Frame to Win the Game

This last weeks teleseminar was one of my best spur-of-the-moment Ideas.

Gearing up for next months seminar (www.TheUltimatePersuasionSeminar.com) I wasn’t able to fully prepare for this tele-seminar so it became an “open forum” on persuasion.

What we quickly came down to was the topic of controlling the frame, or setting the context, of a situation.

Just so that you have an idea of what I mean, controlling the frame is the equivalent of, of choosing which game you are going to play, chess, poker or dominos … and you are chess master. Which game would you choose? Well, if you’re smart the will choose the game over which you have the greatest amount of control – chess!

This works perfectly in persuasion too.

As long as you can pre-set the context of any interaction you have control of the situation.

I explain how I set the frame of every hypnosis session I have. First, I tell them that my responsibility is to make sure they are safe and to give them the right suggestions to get the results they want. But I also tell them I can’t “do it to them”. THEY have a responsibility to follow along completely to get the results.

One caller asked about how to set the frame of a community meeting in which she was wanting to build a large development. That can be very tricky. You can anticipate a lot of people don’t want to change the neighborhood.

But if you frame the meeting around making improvements in key points and solving major problems you’ll leave most detractors without an argument.

Very cool stuff.

It also includes being able to let them assume you are the authority, rather than just tell them you are.

It’s all in how you set the frame.

You can listen to the mp3 of the tele-seminar by going to www.changework.com/audio and signing in.

David

PS, All of this is leading up the Las Vegas Seminar so start to feel excited for no reason and ask yourself why.

Keeping your secret out in the open

Why hide it?

I do what I do, you know what I do, I know you know I know that you know what I do.

My job is to persuade and teach persuasion. So every message I write has an intent to persuade.
Everything that comes from my pen or lips has an intention. Even when I’m talking to myself (I try not to do that in public) has some motive to motivate or manipulate myself into action.

But what you don’t know…well… you don’t know.

You don’t necessarily know the specific intent of my communication. You don’t know the sub-text beneath the words you read or hear.

To understand that would be like having a crystal ball.

To be able to think in those terms and deliver a covert message with an overt intent is the real art of persuasion.

That’s the insight i aim to help teach at The Ultimate Persuasion Seminar this May in Las Vegas.
I love it what I see the light go off over someone head and they get “The Big Picture” of persuasion. That’s when they realize that it’s more than just learning a few language patterns and rapport skills. That’s when they learn the art of “persuasion by enchantment”. That when they learn getting their outcome is ENTIRELY up to them.

I can’t wait!
http://www.theultimatepersuasionseminar.com/

David

PS I’ll also talk about how to use confusion (like at the beginning of this post) to help in persuasion. Yes, I can be a very sneaky person at times. :-)

Eight Things You Should Know About Hypnosis, Uncovering the Truth Behind Some Commonly Held Beliefs

Can I be hypnotized against my will?

Everyone who is mentally sound can be hypnotized although you cannot be hypnotized against your will. When you realize that hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation you can easily understand that you cannot be hypnotized against your will. Can you imagine trying to force someone to relax? It doesn’t work, does it?

Is there any reason to be afraid of hypnosis?

Absolutely not! A lot of people who have never been hypnotized are afraid of what might happen when they are hypnotized. They fear that somehow they will lose control or reveal some deep secrets. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you want to, you can tell lies while you are hypnotized. However if you are attending a hypnotherapist for treatment it will not be in your own best interests to do so.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

Some people are scared that they will get stuck in hypnosis. This is impossible. If you are very tired when you are hypnotized, you may find that because you are very relaxed you will drift off into a very restful sleep. You will wake normally when you have slept enough or when the therapist tells you to wake.

At the end of every hypnosis recording I always included the following suggestion: if this is your normal bedtime you will drift off into a very relaxing sleep and wake at your normal waking time in the morning, feeling fully refreshed. However if this is not your normal bedtime, you will be fully awake and refreshed when I count to ten.

Clients were always amazed that they would wake immediately if they listened to the recording at any time other than bed-time and when they listened to the recording at bed-time they would always drift off into a very relaxing sleep at the end of the recording. In most cases they didn’t even remember hearing the end of the recording. This demonstrates that even when we are in a deep state of hypnosis, our subconscious mind still responds.

Will I lose control?

Absolutely not! During hypnosis you remain in full control. You will not do or say anything that you would not normally do or say. Stage hypnosis gives the impression that the hypnotist is the person in control, but remember that the people a stage hypnotist works with are volunteers. They willingly do what is suggested to them for fun. If you are horrified by what people are told to do, you are highly unlikely to volunteer at a stage show.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Most people who have experienced the hypnotic state will tell you that they felt very deeply relaxed, similar to the feeling you get just before you fall asleep, aware of what’s going on but not particularly caring. Imagine relaxing on a sunlounger by the pool or on a beach on a warm sunny day. You’re not asleep. You can hear children playing nearby, you can hear people talking and laughing but, unless something demands your attention, you remain in blissful relaxation. As soon as a situation arises which demands your attention, either your 10 year-old son asks if he can have an ice cream or your partner brings you a drink, you are immediately alert. It is exactly the same with hypnosis.

Some people report feeling like they’re floating, while others feel like their limbs are very heavy. Although it varies from one person to another when asked, all of my clients admitted it was a wonderful experience. Most of them were amazed to discover that, while they felt as if they had only closed their eyes for a few minutes, in most cases an hour or more had passed.

What is self-hypnosis?

All hypnosis is essentially self-hypnosis, although you can be guided into the hypnotic state by a trained hypnotherapist. Hypnosis is not a form of therapy but hypnotherapy is a form of psychotherapy aided by hypnosis. When a client is hypnotized his subconscious mind is much more open to the suggestions, provided those suggestions do not go against his moral or religious beliefs.

With time, almost anyone can learn to use self-hypnosis at home. Most people prefer to listen to a good hypnotherapy recording as it is sometimes difficult to talk yourself into a deep hypnotic state and then to be aware enough to make the suggestions necessary to make the desired changes.

Can hypnosis help me with personal development?

Absolutely! Whatever you believe about your ability to achieve your goals at a subconscious level will affect your ability to achieve those goals. Hypnotherapy can help you to access the power of your subconscious mind to deal effectively with any challenges which arise and to overcome those deep-rooted obstacles so that you can live the life of your dreams.

How can I benefit from hypnosis when I don’t know enough about it?

You don’t have to understand how anything works in order to benefit from it. I don’t know how my car works, I just know that then I put the key in the ignition my car will start. If it doesn’t, I call a mechanic. When I flick a light switch the light goes on. If it doesn’t work, I change the light bulb. If it still doesn’t work I call an electrician. I don’t need to know how electricity works to enjoy the benefits. It is the same with hypnosis.

The persuasive art of reframe

I worked with a client for stop smoking and who told me that they “failed” and now smoke 10 cigarettes per day instead of her usual 30.

That gave me a quick opportunity to let her know that she has a much greater skill in reducing consumption of her cigarette only 30 minutes per day and if they just can’t smoke for 30 minutes less a day has gained them a non-smoker will.

She found the thought and how much she loves not the smoking habit expressed.

There was not enough time for more work with it, so I gave her another way of looking at it. I told her that if she her cigarettes by reduced from 30 to 10 per day is not a habit. It is now a choice. All they really should do is every time they light up a cigarette that they hate them have to recognise that they Choose to do it and that they are not to have that cigarette just as easily can choose, but it’s only choice. Not good or bad. Only one choice.

Review-

I re-phrased that her “failure” to demonstrate that the hypnosis session had a positive effect. I re-phrased that all she has to do is cut back her smoking by 30 minutes per day and they will be a non-smoker. I reworded her habit in a choice that they don’t have to feel guilty about if that is what she is.

The entire Exchange lasted about 5 minutes.

The lesson that I think is use; always takes what is given and use it to get the results that you are planning.

Okay, they’ll stop smoking? I have no idea. What I do know is that she now has a new way of lowering on smoking, her “habit” and how they can look change.

New MP3 to download on “The Pathway to Power”

The Pathway to Power was the topic of last Wednesdays persuasion tele seminar.

Ohhh…it was cool.

I’d found a file on my computer by hypnotist Mark Cunningham, whom I greatly admire, and he lays it all out about what power is and isn’t, what you can learn from and ultimately when you get enough of it (may we all be so lucky) it really doesn’t mean that much.

You can download it …FOR FREE… at least for now at

Introduction to Stage Hypnosis

Introduction to Stage HypnosisThis book is a brief introduction to performing stage hypnosis. It has been written for those who want to put on hypnotic demonstrations for public entertainment. Whether you be a hypnotherapist, stage entertainer or public speaker wishing to expand your activities this manuscript will give you all the instruction you need.

There is nothing more hilarious than a good demonstration of stage hypnosis. And more than that, there is nothing more dramatic and mysterious. A good hypnosis show has comedy, drama, mystery and excitement. One moment the audience is laughing it’s collective head off and the next moment everyone sits on the edge of their seats, mouths open at some spine chilling demonstration of the weird potential of the human mind.

The book will give a street wise explanation of what hypnotism really is. It will explain exactly why people do the strange things they do on stage. It will tell you how to rehearse such a show and have the correct mental attitude in order to be a success. It will give a choice of introductory lectures and various waking suggestion tests to start the show off, build rapport and get the volunteers in the correct frame of mind to enter hypnosis and entertain the audience.

Explained is the hand relaxation test, the lemon test, the itching test, the magnetic fingers test, and the handlocking test. This is all performed even before the volunteers enter hypnosis and ensures that they are half hypnotised before you even start!

You are taught how to select good subjects and dismiss the not so good ones. You will learn how to use a very powerful method of inducing hypnosis on stage that the author has used internationally. Spending more of your time inside your mind

I’ll admit it.

I spend almost all my time inside my own head. I guess most of us do.

The question is: Is it “quality time” that you’re spending there?

Face it, do you linger on all the old arguments you could have done better?
Do you review old hurts and slights others have given you?
Do you ponder ways of hurting others?
Do you ask yourself (whinny voice) “Why does this always happen to me?”

Not really what I would call “quality time” inside your head, is it?

In fact most of us were given a real gift of mind, brain and thought and no operating instructions.

The result is that we do the best we can with the information at hand.

So just suppose that you take the best performers, athletes, sales people, romantic partners, persuaders and negotiators and modeled just what makes them so damn good at what they do?

That would be very, very cool.

Frankly, I don’t care what area of expertise they have, if they have a system that will show measurable improvement over time I’ll use it and work it like a rented mule.

Well I’ve got one for you.

It’s a book The Mental Edge by Michael Baum
